Welcome back students! This year we will be working together to prepare our communication skills.

Our class follows the Florida State Standards for seventh grade. A full outline can be found at http://www.flstandards.org. We will also share information about the curriculum and what we will be accomplishing in class during our Open House on Thursday, August 28. We are looking forward to a wonderful year!

Classroom Expectations

An effective classroom requires respectable behavior. The “Golden Rule” of our class is “Respect.”

1)  Respect your environment

2)  Respect others

3)  Respect yourself

In the case that you “misplace” your respectful behavior, the following will happen:

1st offense – Verbal Warning

2nd offense – Parent Contact

3rd offense – Detention

4th offense – Conference

5th offense – Parent and administration contact and referral.

*All offenses will be recorded on database to be seen by all teachers. Serious offenses will lead directly to parental and administration contact.

Assignments etc.

Students will be keeping a composition notebook that they will use daily to keep notes/assignments, respond to daily prompts/questions, and summarize their learning for the day.  This “Learning Journal” will account for the majority of your participation grade, so it is important to keep up with it regularly.  Students will also be required to have a book they are interested in reading at all times.

Group Work

Many times, we will work in groups. To become successful in the future, it is essential to collaborate with others in a cooperative way. This requires listening to others viewpoints, working together to solve problems, and participating in discussions and projects as a team. Individual students will be evaluated on their efforts toward all group activities.

Grading Policy

90 – 100% = A

80 – 89%   = B

70 – 79%   = C

60 – 69%   = D

59% and below = F

Work can be made up if you are absent (if possible, ask about work before absence).

Late work may be accepted, but will not earn full credit.

Redoing an assignment:

If you are redoing an assignment for additional credit, you must attach the original assignment, and rubric, to it. No additional points will be given unless these instructions are followed. Any assignment may be redone EXCEPT a test or quiz. Take advantage of this to learn from your mistakes and improve your knowledge (and grade!).

Procedures

Beginning of class:

-     Go to your assigned seat and take out the materials you will need. Also, take out any assignments that need to be turned in.

-     Sharpen pencils.

-     Copy and complete the “Starter” assignment.

During Class

-     Stay in your seat unless instructed otherwise.

-     Keep any trash at your seat until the end of class.

-     Raise your hand if you need anything during class, have a question, or would like to answer a question.

-     If we begin to get too loud, or off task, I will signal the class to return their focus and quiet down. When you see my signal you should immediately stop what you are doing and give me your attention.

End of Class

-     Throw away any garbage near your seat.

-     Put away any books or resources you may have used.

-     Pack up supplies

-     Make sure desks are straight.

-     Do not leave until class is dismissed.
